About the Halifax Philharmonic Club
Founded in 1945, the Halifax Philharmonic Club this year celebrates its 80th anniversary. Started when Halifax had few concerts of serious classical music, the Club today maintains its original goal of presenting each year, over the winter and spring months, a series of concerts and recitals by leading international ensembles and individual musicians. Many of the artists or ensembles in the Club’s programme have already been greeted with critical acclaim, have performed at famous venues throughout the world (Halifax seems to be a favourite venue for those who have given, or are about to give, concerts at London’s Wigmore Hall!) or have won important international competitions.
In recent years, such artists have included the Cremona, Castalian, Sacconi and Dover string quartets, the Trio Isimzis, and artists such as the cellistg Sheku Kanneh Mason, the virtuoso guitarist Milos Karadaglic and renowned harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani.
Halifax Philharmonic Club concerts are promoted and organised by a Committee which meets three times a year.
The current Committee Members are:
Douglas Jarman (Chair)
James Hogg (Membership Secretary and Treasurer)
Kate Dugdale
Judy Green
Annie Hamer
Angela Jarman
Tony Ward
Richard Webster
The Club is keen to recruit new Committee members in order to maintain its efficiency and high profile.. The duties of Committee members are not onerous and the 3 meetings a year are informal and stimulating. Anyone interested in standing for the Committee should contact the Chair (Douglas Jarman) or Membership Secretary (James Hogg). The Annual General Meeting of the Club is held before the first concert of the season, normally in October. All full ticket subscribers are automatically members of the Halifax Philharmonic Club, and are welcome to attend the AGM. We thank all our subscribers and patrons for their continued support. As expenses rise and external grants and aid disappear we need to ask our members and supporters to help us maintain the standard of our concerts. If you are able to help with a donation under Gift Aid, either by an addition to a subscription or separately to the Treasurer we can claim an extra 25p for each £1 given. We would be most grateful for any assistance in this difficult financial climate.
